UK Lecturers
In the UK, lecturers mainly hold a position within universities. This will involve teaching students and also conducting research into their relevant fields of expertise.
The term 'Lecturer' was originally used in contrast to the term 'Professor'. A professor was a very prestigious, high ranking position within a university. Many professors weren't required to do much teaching, but every now and again they would do so.
Most lecturers have a doctorate (PH.D etc) of some sort, which is usually a prerequisite of getting a lecturers job. Sometimes, before becoming a lecturer, a candidate will spend time as a postdoctoral researcher.
At Oxford and Cambridge universities, it has become important to distinguish between universtity lecturers and college lecturers. College level lecturers are quite often used in a part time role.
